Commuting to work each day is always a bore, but who says it can’t be the best thirty minutes of your morning? What about doing gardening or working out? These chores will fly by when you’re listening to an audio book. And since June is Audio Book Month, we thought it would be fun to poll the Retreat team to help create a list of eight audio books everyone should be listening to.
1. One More Thing by B.J. Novak; Narrator: Various — B.J. Novak has created what we’d call a masterpiece with One More Thing, but he took it to another level when he enlisted the help of his famous and funny friends to help put together a fabulous audio book.
2. World War Z by Max Brooks; Narrator: Various — To quote from the Wikipedia page, “World War Z is read by Brooks but includes other actors taking on the roles of the many individual characters who are interviewed in the novel. Brooks’ previous career in voice acting and voice-over work meant he could recommend a large number of the cast members.” Some of the people that contributed are Nathan Fillion, Simon Pegg and Denise Crosby.
3. Robopocalypse by Daniel H. Wilson; Narrator: Mike Chamberlain — They are in your house. They are in your car. They are in the skies…Now they’ll be in your ears! This brilliantly conceived action-filled epic, a terrifying story with heart-stopping implications for the real technology all around us…and an entertaining and engaging thriller unlike anything else written in years and makes for great listening!
4. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me (And Other Concerns) by Mindy Kaling; Narrator: Mindy Kaling — With a book that starts off with an anticipated list of FAQ’s, our favourite being, “This sounds okay, but not as good as Tina Fey’s book. Why isn’t this more like Tina Fey’s book?”, you know that you’re in for a good chuckle. Not only is she a comedian, actress, writer, producer, playwright, but she’s also the star of her own television show. Be sure to listen to a snippit of Mindy reading from her book here.
5. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn; Narrator: Julia Whelan & Kirby Heyborne — There’s no doubt you’ve heard lots and lots about Gone Girl and you’ve also probably heard that it’ll be released on film at the end of this year. But did you know that the audio book is fantastic? Read a great Q&A with the voices of the audio book, Kirby Heyborne and Julia Whelan who discuss the challenges of creating a successful audiobook.
6. Bossypants by Tina Fey; Narrator: Tina Fey — She’s made you laugh on 30 Rock, she had you slapping your knee as Sarah Palin and now she’ll have you roaring out loud again with her hilarious memoir Bossypants. Of course, it only makes sense that Tina herself would read from the book and thanks to some online searching, we were able to find you a couple of audio clips or Tina sharing what it’s like to be photographed for magazines and how she reacted the first time she met Lorne Michaels.
7. Outlander by Diana Gabaldon; Narrator: Davina Porter –With the new book on the horizon (June 10th!!!) and a television show that’s set to debut this fall, we recommend checking out the audio version of Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. Get sucked into the world of Claire Randall, who is leading a double life. She has a husband in one century, and a lover in another…
8. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption by Laura Hillenbrand; Narrator: Edward Herrmann — You won’t want to hit pause when your reading Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. She writes with the same rich and vivid narrative voice she displayed in Seabiscuit. Telling an unforgettable story of a man’s journey into extremity, Unbroken is a testament to the resilience of the human mind, body, and spirit.
